The Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique is a practical method for developing awareness and changing unconscious habits of tension, effort and stress that shape the way we move, stand, sit, breathe and function in all other manner of activities. In lessons, I use gentle hands-on guidance and simple verbal direction to help you function with greater poise, clarity, freedom and ease. It is an educational process rather than a treatment: you learn to apply the work yourself so the changes carry beyond the lesson.
I am an AmSAT certified Alexander Technique Teacher.
What a lesson is like
Lessons are 50 minutes. Wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. We work with simple activities: sitting, standing, walking, lying down and sometimes with something specific you do daily, like playing an instrument. I provide gentle hands-on guidance and clear verbal direction to help you become aware of, and ultimately release and prevent, habits of bracing and undue effort.
Who it helps
People seek the Alexander Technique for many reasons: chronic tension and pain, stress and anxiety. Others come seeking better performance whether that’s music, voice, athletics, martial arts or som physical craft. It’s also a good fit for those seeking to deepen and refine their subtle awareness and sensitivity. Regardless of motivation, it helps the student understand how their own habits contribute to how they experience themselves in their lives more generally.
How many lessons?
Many people start with a short series of lessons to learn the basics and then continue as needed or desired. I encourage anyone who may be curious to try an introductory lesson in order to get a better understanding and direct experience of the technique. Lessons build on one another, so regular sessions in the beginning help the work take hold. A lesson package is available (see fees page).
